Using online multiple choice questions with multiple attempts: A case for self-directed learning among tertiary students

<span lang="EN-GB">Criticisms on multiple choice questions (MCQs) include the possibility of students answering MCQs correctly by guessing, and generally are said to fall short in cultivating independent learning skills, such as taking charge their goals. Countering these common concerns, this research used online MCQ exercises with attempts investigate experiences that drove become self-directed learners. In research, 60 completed two sets outside classroom time for six weeks consecutively. Both focus group interviews an survey were conducted using exercise relation development (SDL). The findings study showed criticisms may be unfounded. Data leads conclusion majority do not just try guess at correct answers. Rather, many them attempted more than once improve themselves indicating they interested self-learning. Students also reported utilised search inquiry skills clearly motivated initiatives plan how overcome weaknesses independently looking relevant resources, determine own goals, evaluate performance a firm indicator SDL development. Based findings, is able refute claim unable cultivate skills.</span>
